Correspondent

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As the Correspondent, your job is to write a letter or email. Your letter can be to the author (we'll actually send them or email them if possible) or you can pretend that you are a character in the book writing to another character in the book. If you have a better idea, I'd love to hear about it. Make sure to talk to me so that I can approve the idea and offer it to the rest of the group as an option. If you can't find en email or snail mail address for the author, we can try the publishing company.

In any case, your letter needs to demonstrate some advanced thinking. If you choose to write the author, choose one interesting or challenging excerpt from your book. Describe your thinking, questions, and inferences. Then ask the author to enlighten us! (Not sure what enlighten means? Look it up!) If you choose to write to a character, share your predictions and give the character advice about what to do next.

Please write your letter in a document and save it before you post it to the blog so that we can have a nice printed copy to send in the "snail mail" if necessary.

10 Billion Bonus Points will be awarded for any actual comments or responses you generate from students outside of East's fifth grade, and Double Bonus Points will be awarded if you can convince an author to visit and post on our blog! (The bonus points are fake - but wouldn't it be great if the real author commented on our page?)

You only need one approved comment to this post by the end of the literature circle.

Thanks!
~Ms. Vander Velde

Dear Jean George,

I am reading your book called “My Side of the Mountain” and I really like the book. What is really great about the book is that many of the people had this experience. Well not really, but close. One time I wanted to run away from my house too. I wanted to run away not to the mountains. I wanted to run away to a place that had many trees and and were no one goes. But, that never happened, because it was really cold outside and it got really cold. I decided not to run away from home. I bet I'm not the only person who did this.

What is really interesting about this book is that it's adventure. You always want to know what happens next. That is why you are such a good author. In the book Sam has a lot of adventure. Like in the book it said that Sam was running away from home. That is really cool because Sam is going to have a lot of adventure. He will find where he is going to live. Then he will find food. That is a lot of adventure because he is going to have to go into the woods to find food. He might see or meet someone on the way.

Another thing that is good about this book is that Sam is very smart. I like to read about smart people because they have so many good ideas. Like there is one part from the book were it said that Sam made a house in a tree. I think that is really smart because Sam could stay nice and warm in the tree. I think that it is so cool to read about Sam because he is so smart.

Dear Scott O' Dell,
Hello, how are you doing? I like your writting. I think, that some of it doesn't make that much ssence, but no matter what you are writing, to me, it is interesting. see, our 5th Grade, has this homework oppertunitty., which our teachers make sure, that we do our homework, then at night, after we read, we have to write about what we read. The past two weeks, my group and I, have been reading your book called,"Island of the Blue Dolphins." i enjoy your books, and your writing. It really interests me. It actually makes me want to reead more of your books. iI like that feeling because, I usually don't kike to read, but when I read specific books, I enjoy reading, and I cant stop reading. i enjoy, enjoying to read. do you like writing books, for kids? do you also write books for adults? Do you annjoy your writing and stories? I have only read 1 book of yours, but I like to read your writing, it makes me curious about what is going to happen next in the story. Well, that is my letter to you, and have a wonder ful day, Mr. Scoot O' Dell! P.S. (Please write me back!)
